Dissapointing day for me as my wife was ill and I basically had to get home to support her with the kids ~ no chance of staying overnight and all the next day. So in the second session I took an incredibly aggressive stance and raised every other hand or so. Raised 6 times on the trot without a caller , "raise,raise,raise, I'm like a machine", or "I'm just giving my chips away but no-one wants them" was my trash talk. Re-reraised a raiser all-in , he thought for almost a minute before folding, so I turned over my 2,3 of diamonds !! upto 15k down to 4k back upto 18k and then about 10 to 14k for the last hour I have to say playing without any fear like that was a lot of fun and quite successful. I was desperatley looking to get my chips in before the dinner break, but couldn't find a chance until the last hand where I got called eventually with JQ v AK. Flop came 892 giving me 10 outsx2, but that was it. I was saying to the guy I dont want to win .....not too sure he believed me, anyway as players were already breaking for dinner I avoided the cardroom applause that greeted all those who exited the tourny.

The Tournament was great value, players OK but not brilliant, buffet ran out and card room was ridiculously cramped, but all in all I will certainly be trying to get in the Welsh one in late January and I urge other Den members to give it a go too .
I was not impressed with Aspers after all the good things I had heard ~ it reminded me of a poor version of a downtown vegas casino dive. However the entertainment outside the club in the gate probably would make up for this !!

I went out not long after the break, got involved in a pot just b4 the break and reduced my chips from 20k to 6200, was playing the player not my cards and had him read perfectly but unfortunatly he could not lay down his AK and he called my reraise on the flop and bet s on turn and river.

After the break I decided that I had to get a couple of double ups or bust out blinds were 600, 1200 and when it get to my BB i was raised by UTG who had 4,400 allin and everyone else folded I looked down at QQ and called, he had K2 spades and caught a K. I was left with 2,000 chips my small blind i had 6,3 and folded which left me 1,400 chips, they were going in with the first A or K or if I had 3 or 4 entering the pot b4 me, anyway on the button i had A3 off and 1 raise (3 x BB) so i pushed in and SB BB both folded up against AQ which held up and i left in about 115th.

It was fun and apart from 1 hand i played good poker and had the table dominated. Bring on the next one!!!!

Unlucky guys, more details asap for the Welsh one these are the sort of tournaments we should be looking at hitting in a big way - I also think maybe there is free goodies from either APAT or their sponsors if we affiliate to the APAT just an idea if anyone wants to chase it up

I'm sorry but saying that you didn't want to win, what kind of play is that. You went as a Furness Poker Den sponsered player and from what i assume that doesn't entail not playing to win. Fair enough you had a valid reason tha you wanted to get home, yet why go in the first place, you could of offered you seat to a fellow den member or just not gone at all, from what i can see that is 25 wasted from the Furness Poker Den fund. I'm not causing an arguement here i just feel that as a sponsered player you should give 110% in any tournaments that arise, and if you feel that you can't give everything towards that tournament then give it a miss!

I can understand as your Mrs didn't mean to be ill or planned it and I sincerely hope that she is better - Snapper too has a valid point, I think as a gesture of good will maybe you should forego the buy-in percentage for Wales and still do the split, just a suggestion

Michelle was complaining about her leg in the morning , but I ran her a bath, massaged it , got the deep heat out, and pampered her. It seemed a lot better so I decided to go to Aspers. When I was there I played to win, but at the first break I rang the shop and the leg had swollen up badly, tried to stick it out, but it was becoming obvious that she was not going to be able to cope with the kids for 2 straight days, so very reluctantly I had to make the decision to come home. Tried to just play very loose and aggressive on my table but just couldn't lose them for 2 hours , put them all in last hand before dinner break ~ I had decided I couldnt hang around any longer and wouldn't have come back to my seat even if i had won.

Got home and took Michelle to Furness General for 3 hours before treatment was complete. She is OK, but cant walk on it at all. So Im now running around for her at home instead of scooping up chips in Newcastle.

It was 25 wasted in the end , but just circumstances and not what I wanted, I'll go with the dens feeling on it.

I didn't need the full details it was just a bit hazy your post, i'm sure you can see how i misinterpreted it, but glad you've cleared it up and didn't realise you were already there when you found out how bad it was.

I have to say, that the experience has actually tought me a bit about how players freeze up in these live bigger tourneys and how to play against them. I dont often come away from a tournament thinking I have learnt a lot ....but I did yesterday.

Good point Jon - I must say I came away feeling I should have been much more aggressive - Nobody wanted to be first out and everybody played extremely tightly. Unfortunately every time I tried to semi-bluff raise pre-flop, a very tight player came over the top of me - When they haven't played a hand for an hour and they come over the top of a 4 x BB raise I think it a good move to fold my suited Ace. No-one called my JJ when i raised it 3xBB and I folded QQ when I sensed immense strength with a raise and re-raise before me in early positions - turned out I would have been up against 66 and AK. I thought the re-raiser was AA KK or AK and I thought even with AK it was a bit early for a coin toss - However maybe you need to win a coin toss to get into a position to bully the table. I still think it was a good fold - It would have been very easy to push and complain about going out on QQ.

The one hand I do regret is when I was down to about 30% of average chips in the BB and had 5 limpers - Although I only had Q2 off I feel now I should have raised all-in to mop up the weak calls. This would have been a double up if all had folded. I checked and nothing came on the flop for me. Saying that I saw AK, AA and KK all flat called pre-flop on our table, so there could have been anything out there.

I do feel (considered) aggression is the way to build a stack in these tournaments IF the cards don't come. You just have to be prepared to go out of the tournament early if you run into a hand - but I think this is better than a slow painful death!!

It was definitely very good experience and there is no substitute for experience. I think every Den member should try and get in the next one - they won't regret it.
